Report First Assessment

Due: December 12, 2003

Your report, when finished, will be a standard five chapter report. Each chapter has a distinct purpose. The first assessment will be conducted on Chapter 1, Chapter 2, and the beginning of Chapter 3. The report is is critical to your understanding of the importance, impact, and purpose of your artefact. It is important that it be well researched and written. It is also critical that you have a firm understanding of proper referencing style. The style used for this paper is APA style.

Assessment Criteria
Excellent

Chapters 1, 2, and the beginnings of 3 are comprehensive and well researched. You have shown to the reader that you understand the significance and importance of educational multimedia and how your artefact will contribute to the educational experience of your chosen target group. It is also well written with few or no grammar and spelling errors. It is also well referenced and you have used the APA style guides correctly.

Chapter 1 distinctly states the purpose and rational of using multimedia in the classroom. It also explains the UK's National Curriculum, including IT goals, and the NGfL. If your chosen subject has some specific and different approach to teaching and the use of multimedia (such as language instruction) this needs to be stated here. You do NOT begin to define your project. You do, HOWEVER, in the chapter state (very briefly) what your project will be about, and then refer the reader to the the Concept Document located in the Appendix.

Example: The purpose of this project will be to produce a multimedia artefact designed to teach the concepts of light and motion to children aged 7-8 studying science at Key Stage 2. (Appendix 1)

Chapter 2 is a comprehensive review of the secondary literature associated with instructional multimedia. You have reviewed the literature and managed to understand what is relevant without having to reference everything that you've read. This chapter is well written and it is obvious that the words are your own and that you understand what you've written. You have also properly referenced all material.

Chapter 3 has been started and the reviews of other educational media have been included. You have begun the process of explaining your artefact and how it fits in with the information/purpose stated in Chapter 1 and with the review of the secondary literature in Chapter 2.

Reference page is included and the layout and style are according to the APA manual.

Appendix are attached. At this point, these would include your Concept Document and Node Map.

Average

Chapters 1, 2, and the beginnings of 3 are somewhat lacking in writing standards and research. You have shown to the reader that you understand some of the significance and importance of educational multimedia and how your artefact will contribute to the educational experience of your chosen target group, but you've not been as clear as you should. You have some writing, grammar and spelling errors. You have made some mistakes in referencing and you have not used the APA style guides correctly.

Chapter 1 states the purpose and rational of using multimedia in the classroom, but it is lacking and somewhat confusing. You have also not explained the UK's National Curriculum, including IT goals, and the NGfL so that the reader understands. If your chosen subject has some specific and different approach to teaching and the use of multimedia (such as language instruction) you have not stated it here. You also make the common error of beginning to discus your project and define the problem according to the brief.

Chapter 2 is a review of the secondary literature associated with instructional multimedia. You have reviewed the literature but it's not apparent that you understand what is relevant. You are referencing everything that you've read without realizing what is relevant. This chapter has some writing problems and it is obvious that you don't really understand what you've written. You have also not properly referenced all material.

Chapter 3 has been started and the reviews of other educational media may have been included, but you've included everything, not just the information that relates to your own project. You have begun the process of explaining your artefact and how it fits in with the information/purpose stated in Chapter 1 and with the review of the secondary literature in Chapter 2, but the reader is unclear how this relates to your artefact.

Reference page is included but the layout and style are not completely according to the APA manual.

Appendix are not necessarily attached. At this point, these should include your Concept Document and Node Map.

Fail

Chapters 1, 2, and the beginnings of 3 are lacking in writing standards and research. You haven't shown to the reader that you understand some of the significance and importance of educational multimedia and how your artefact will contribute to the educational experience of your chosen target group. You have many writing, grammar and spelling errors. You have made many mistakes in referencing and you have not used the APA style guides correctly.

Chapter 1 doesn't state the purpose and rational of using multimedia in the classroom, and is lacking and very confusing. You have also not explained the UK's National Curriculum, including IT goals, and the NGfL. If your chosen subject has some specific and different approach to teaching and the use of multimedia (such as language instruction) you have not stated it here.

Chapter 2 is a poor review of the secondary literature associated with instructional multimedia. You have not reviewed the literature and it's apparent that you do not understand what is relevant. This chapter has many writing problems and it is obvious that you don't understand what you've written. You have also not properly referenced the material.

Chapter 3 has not been started and the reviews of other educational media are not included, You have not begun the process of explaining your artefact and how it fits in with the information/purpose stated in Chapter 1 and with the review of the secondary literature in Chapter 2.

Reference page is not included.

Appendixes are not attached. At this point, these should include your Concept Document and Node Map.

Artefact First Assessment

Due: Week of January 18-24, 2004. You will be emailed a presentation schedule

When finished your artefact will be a complete piece of work that demonstrates the skills and knowledge that you have collected during your years at university. You've had a year to develop this piece of work and it should be one of your primary pieces in your portfolio.

This work shows that you have a thorough understanding of a particular target group and the needs of that group.

At the first assessment we will be looking to see that you've worked with your users and have defined a look and feel that will then be developed over the rest of the module until the artefact is complete.

Assessment Criteria
Excellent

You have worked closely with your user group and have gathered information from other sources (such as magazines, television shows, books etc.) that appeal to your target audience. With this information, the input from your users, and a thorough understanding of design and instructional principles you have decided on a look and feel for your artefact. You have laid out a navigational structure and are in the position to be ready to insert the content. Your navigational structure, as well as your design are appropriate to your target group.

You have completed a modified functional specification and have a thorough asset list prepared.

All your artefact needs is time to complete. It has been thoroughly researched and designed. You are in the position of being able to complete it to a prototype stage in plenty of time for adequate user testing to occur.

Average

Although you have worked with your user group you have not gathered as much information about their likes and dislikes from sources other than your particular group of primarily/secondary students. You haven't gathered information from other sources (such as magazines, television shows, books etc.) that appeal to your target audience. You are relying too much on the input from your users. You have some understanding of design and instructional principles but you haven't managed to quite capture an appropriate look and feel for your artefact. You have begun the process of laying out a navigational structure but there are problems with the structure. Your navigational structure as well as your design are somewhat appropriate to your target group, but you have made some basic mistakes.

You have begun a modified functional specification and asset list but you haven't really decided on what your project will look like and how it will function. You are still making the common mistake of letting it 'build itself'.

Your artefact looks as if it will be completed with little problems but you will be rushed and will not have the amount of time needed for proper user testing.

Fail

You do not have appeared to have worked with your user group. You have not gathered information about their likes and dislikes, from either the group of primary/secondary students or from other sources (such as magazines, television shows, books etc.) that appeal to your target audience. You are not demonstrating an understanding of design and instructional principles that are appropriate your artefact and user group. You have not begun the process of laying out a navigational structure or the structure is confusing and not usable. Your navigational structure as well as your design are not appropriate to your target user group.

You do not have a modified functional specification and asset list prepared. You are relying on the fact that you have several months to finish the project and as everyone knows you work best under pressure.

Your artefact does not look as if it will be completed, or if completed that you will have any time for user testing.

Report Second Assessment

Due: May 7, 2004

Your report, when finished, will be a standard five chapter report. Each chapter has a distinct purpose. The second assessment will be conducted on Chapter 3, Chapter 4, and Chapter 5. The report is is critical to your understanding of the importance, impact, and purpose of your artefact. It is important that it be well researched and written. It is also critical that you have a firm understanding of proper referencing style. The style used for this paper is APA style.
Assessment Criteria
Excellent

Chapters 3, 4, and 5 are comprehensive and well written. You have shown to the reader that you understand the development process of educational multimedia and how your artefact will contribute to the educational experience of your chosen target group. It is also well written with few or no grammar and spelling errors. It is also well referenced and you have used the APA style guides correctly.

Chapter 3 is completed and the reviews of other educational media have been included. You have presented the process of explaining your artefact, how it developed and how it fits in with the information/purpose stated in Chapter 1 and with the review of the secondary literature in Chapter 2.

Chapter 4 is a thorough examination of the user testing process and how this process allowed you to refine your artefact.

Chapter 5 is a summary analysis of the process of creating an educational artefact and the recommendations of what needs to be changed if your artefact were to go into complete commercial development. How could it be expanded to move from a free service into something that a company could make a profit on?

Reference page is included and the layout and style are according to the APA manual.

Appendixes are attached. At this point, these would include your Concept Document, Node Map, Functional Specification, Contract between you and your teacher, and your teacher's sign-off on the project.

Chapters 3, 4, and 5 are somewhat lacking in writing standards and approach. You have shown to the reader that you have some understanding of the development process of educational multimedia and how your artefact will contribute to the educational experience of your chosen target group, but you've not been as clear as you should. You have some writing, grammar and spelling errors. You have made some mistakes in referencing and you have not used the APA style guides correctly.

Chapter 4 is an examination of the user testing process and how this process allowed you to refine your artefact but it is not obvious that you have either done the user testing process, or that you've changed your artefact because of user testing..

Chapter 5 is a beginning of a summary analysis of the process of creating an educational artefact and the recommendations of what needs to be changed if your artefact were to go into complete commercial development. You seem somewhat unclear as to how could it be expanded to move from a free service into something that a company could make a profit on.

Reference page is included but the layout and style are not completely according to the APA manual.

Appendixes are not necessarily attached. At this point, these should include your Concept Document, Node Map, Functional Specification, Contract between you and your teacher, and your teacher's sign-off on the project.

You have many writing, grammar and spelling errors. You have made many mistakes in referencing and you have not used the APA style guides correctly.

Chapter 4 is written so that it is obvious that you have not done the user testing phase or that you have totally misunderstood the process and thereby have not changed your artefact.

Chapter 5 doesn't summarize or analyze the process of creating an educational artefact and you have not made any recommendations of what needs to be changed if your artefact were to go into complete commercial development. You are unclear as to how could it be expanded to move from a free service into something that a company could make a profit on.

Reference page is not included or is totally in the wrong style.

Appendixes are not attached. At this point, these should include your Concept Document, Node Map, Functional Specification, Contract between you and your teacher, and your teacher's sign-off on the project.

Artefact Second Assessment

Due: May 7, 2004

You will make a presentation during the end of May or early June. The presentation schedule will be emailed to you. You are NOT assessed on your Hypermedia presentation. This is an opportunity to practice your presentation skills prior to presenting your Major Project (where you ARE assessed on presentation skills)

At the second assessment we will be looking to see that you've worked with your users and have developed an artefact that has a look and feel that is appropriate to your target user group. You will also be assessed as to how well you have applied the theories of instructional multimedia into your artefact.

Assessment Criteria
Excellent

You have worked closely with your user group and have gathered information from other sources (such as magazines, television shows, books etc.) that appeal to your target audience. With this information, the input from your users, and a thorough understanding of design and instructional principles you have accomplished a look and feel for your artefact that is appropriate to your user group. Your navigational structure and content follow appropriate guidelines and theories for instructional multimedia. Your navigational structure, as well as your design are appropriate to your target group.

You have excelled in the production of an instructional artefact that users in your target user group will find both educational as well as fun to use.

Your user testing has shown what needed to be changed to make your artefact top notch and you have implemented those changes.

Average

You have worked with your user group and have accomplished a look and feel that is somewhat appropriate to your user group. Your navigational structure and content follow many of the theoretical guidelines for instructional multimedia, but it is somewhat lacking. You have manged to target your user group, but there are elements of your design/content that are superficial or lacking.

You have produced an instructional artefact that users in your target user group will find both educational as well as fun to use.

You probably didn't manage to get a chance to user test your artefact as much you would have liked and there are changes that should have been made if you'd had the time.

Fail

You do not have appeared to have worked with your user group. You have not gathered information about their likes and dislikes, from either the group of primary/secondary students or from other sources (such as magazines, television shows, books etc.) that appeal to your target audience. You did not demonstrate an understanding of design and instructional principles that are appropriate your artefact and user group. Your navigational structure is confusing and not appropriate to the target group.

You have not produced an instructional artefact that users in your target user group will find both educational as well as fun to use.

You probably didn't manage to get a chance to user test your artefact.
