Working
with a primary or secondary school teacher, design an online CAL
(computer assisted learning) project that will support an element
of the UK's National Curriculum. This CAL is designed to be a part
of the National Grid for Learning (NGfL). Whatever aspect of Key
Stages 1-4 you choose to tackle, you must do so in cooperation with
a teacher and students. The piece should be finished to a final
standard, narrow in its focus, but deep in its structure.
It is strongly
recommended that you purchase a domain name for your web site and
to obtain web hosting without ads. This will cause your work to
appear very professional, especially when you submit it to the NGfL
(if you choose). Keep in mind that the Hypermedia project can become
a central part of your portfolio

Due: December 12, 2003 |
Report:
You will complete a project
report for this project. The report is to be produced individually.
If you are a member of a team you are to focus on the area you worked
on. Your report needs to be laid out according to APA style guides.
See
attached sheet on writing a report
In December you should
have completed Chapter 1, Chapter 2, and approximately 1/2 of Chapter
3 of your report. The December assessment will focus on these chapters.
At this point you should have completed your Concept Document, and
have begun your Functional Specification. You will also need to
have completed a Node Map of your project.

You will be
emailed a presentation schedule. The dates will be the week of January
18-24, 2004

Artefact:
Working with a primary
or secondary school teacher, design an online CAL (computer assisted
learning) project that will support an element of the UK's National
Curriculum. This CAL is designed to be a part of the National
Grid for Learning (NGfL). Whatever aspect of Key Stages 1-4 you
choose to tackle, you must do so in cooperation with a teacher
and students. The piece should be finished to a final standard,
narrow in its focus, but deep in its structure.
Strategies:
You may work individually
or;
You may work in a team
of no more than three (3) to produce a large piece. However, it
should be clearly defined who is responsible for which piece of
the project and each component should be able to stand on its
own.
Example 1: Your team
decides to work in the subject area of geography. One member works
on a subject in geography for Key Stage 2, another member of the
team works on the same subject for Key Stage 3, while the third
member creates learning reinforcement games for both Key Stage
2 and Key Stage 3. As a TEAM you decide the look and feel of the
artefact and the navigational structure. Each piece of the project
will be able to be assessed independently of the other. Assessment
will be done individually not as a team.
Example 2: Your team
decides to create a work in the subject area of physics. As a
group you decide on Key Stage 4. As a group you decide on the
look/feel and navigational structure. One team member creates
the learning material, another member creates a series of tutorials,
and drills, while the third member creates simulations, and games.
Again, each piece of the project will be able to be assessed independently
of the other.
For ANY team project
you must get prior approval of the team and the division of duties.
In January you will be
assessed on how well you have laid out your artefact according to
the Node Map you submitted in December. We will NOT be looking for
a completed project, but rather you will be assessed on how well
you have planned what you need to do in the Spring Semester. You
should bring to the assessment your sketchbook showing how your
designs have evolved. You should have decided on the look and feel
of the artefact and have planned the navigation.

Due: May 7, 2004 |
Report:
You will complete a project
report for this project. The report is to be produced individually.
If you are a member of a team you are to focus on the area you worked
on. Your report needs to be laid out according to APA style guides.
See
attached sheet on writing a report
In May you should have
completed Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3, Chapter 4, and Chapter
5 of your report. The May assessment will focus on Chapter 3, Chapter
4, and Chapter 5. At this point you should have completed your artefact
and have done significant user testing with the students involved
in this project. Your Chapter 4 is devoted to the user testing part
of the process, with Chapter 5 being devoted to the recommendations
you would make prior to this project going from Beta Testing to
full scale development.
|
Due: May 7, 2004
You will make
a presentation during the end of May or
early
June. The presentation schedule will be emailed to you. You are
NOT assessed on your Hypermedia presentation. This is an opportunity
to practice your presentation skills prior to presenting your Major
Project (where you ARE assessed on presentation skills)

on your artefact. You will make a presentation, however, the presentation
will not be assessed. The assessment will focus on the artefact.
We have you make the presentation to give you presenting practice
prior to presenting your major project.
For final presentation
you will be given a submission date and will be required to have
your files uploaded on the the university server for assessment.
